Mercy Hospice Shop Celebrates Diwali

On Friday 1st November, staff and volunteers at the Mercy Hospice Ellerslie Shop decided to get into the spirit of the Hindu Diwali festival by dressing up in beautiful saris for the occasion.

Volunteer Anita Maharaj-Booth and Mercy Hospice Shop Window Dresser Min Goodwin came up with the idea.

“We really wanted to do something cheery and for the community,” Anita says,
“And we’d always talked about dressing up. Here was our opportunity.”

Anita, who has been a volunteer at the Ellerslie Shop for the past two years, provided the women with the saris and bindis.

“The feedback has been very positive,” Anita says. Shoppers were treated to gulab jamun – a delicious deep fried Indian treat as part of the celebrations.

“Mercy Hospice Shops bring many cultures together,” Anita says, “Whether shoppers or staff there is a true melting pot of cultures represented here. To celebrate peace, light and love now is a wonderful start to the upcoming Christmas celebrations.”
